Monday, May 30th

Bonham City opened the day for Oklahoma Girls State bright and early this morning. They did a great job and set the bar high for the rest of the week. After opening ceremonies, the ladies headed into city meetings in which they elected and appointed candidates for all city offices and positions. We then heard from Dannye Carpenter and Kaitlyn Kirksey about their experiences as Oklahoma senators at Girls Nation last summer.

After lunch the ladies reconvened for county mixers and district mixers, where ladies from both the Boomer and Sooner parties filed for office and gave their first speeches. This is the beginning of a long and exciting journey for our delegates.

We concluded the day with former delegate and 1st Lieutenant United States Army, Emily Thompson. Emily told the citizens her story of trial and triumph as both a member of the army and an army wife. There was not a dry eye in the room when she was finished.

Finally, Past Department President, Sue Heil read the Poppy Story and the delegates each placed a poppy in our wreath. This ceremony is always a favorite among Girls State.

Tomorrow we will hear from The Sojourners and Sarah Brown. We had a great Memorial Day here at Girls State.

Thank you to all of the men and women who gave their lives for our country. You all are much appreciated.
