Today we began the 73rd session of Oklahoma Girls State! After hours spent in preparation, it is always exciting when the ladies finally arrive.
After moving in and spending some time getting to know one another, the girls went to the forum building for the first time where director, Betty McElderry, led the opening session. Next, we welcomed Reverend Lori Walke with a big OOOOOOOklahoma. Always a favorite at Girls State, Walke gave an inspiring talk about living "As if" we have already changed the world. She encourage the ladies to get to know their counselors and to own stereotypes such as "nerd" and "bossy".
After dinner the ladies returned to the forum for a class on Parliamentary Procedure taught by Nicki Pearce. This is the procedure in which all meetings at Girls State are held, so that they are done in an efficient manner. We wrapped up the night by filing for city offices.
Tomorrow we look forward to hearing about Girls Nation from Gloria Tso and Summer Stevens, Representative Emily Virgin, Emily Thompson, 2nd Lieutenant United States Army, and Sue Heil. The girls will have the opportunity to file for Girls Nation tomorrow night. Don't forget to stop by the Girls State store. We look forward to what the week will bring. Welcome to Girls State!
