The first full day of Oklahoma Girls State 2015 has officially been completed, and what an exciting day it has been! Bonham City did a fabulous job on the opening ceremony, and we heard about Girls Nation from 2014 senators Gloria Tso and Summer Stevens.
Next each city held a meeting in which city elections and appointments took place. The results of these elections will be published in the Monday edition of the Girls Stater.
After lunch the girls began filing for county offices. During this time those who filed for the Girls Nation selection process began by taking a test on current events. Later this week the staff will pick up to 8 delegates to participate in whistle stops in front of each county. After the test was over, our state gathered once more in the forum and our city officials were sworn in by 2014 Governor Gloria Tso. Finally the girls filed for District and State offices this afternoon.
After dinner we had the privilege to hear from former Girls Stater, counselor, and 2nd Lieutenant United States Army, Emily Thompson. She told her story of overcoming life's obstacles, and shared her perspective as both an active member of the army, as well as an army wife.
We wrapped this Memorial Day up with the Poppy Story read by past department president, Sue Heil. The girls had the opportunity to put together a wreath of poppies made by veterans across Oklahoma. This moving experience is always one of the most memorable parts of the week for the girls.
We look forward to hearing from The Honorable Todd Lamb, Lieutenant Governor, State of Oklahoma and Attorney Sarah Brown. Don't forget your merchandise from the Girls State Store!
