Today was our last full day at Girls State. It began bright and early, as our newly elected state officials left for the capitol at 7:30 where they met with their counterparts and were given a tour. While they were gone, the rest of the delegates resumed a normal day in the forum.

After the city of Akin led the opening ceremony, members of the House and Senate left to work with special guests Ben Odom and Leslie Blair. Simultaneously, Representative Lisa Billy taught a class on rights and responsibilities.

Following Representative Billy, Ms. Autumn McMahan led a class about nonprofits and the various ways in which the ladies can make a difference where they are at. After the presentation, delegates had the opportunity to choose from an extensive list of organizations to learn more about.

After lunch, the legislature met back up and continued to work through the bills that were presented to them. At the same time, other delegates met with Justice Noma Gurich and other attorneys to work on various case studies.

Next the ladies gathered in the forum once more to  hear from Carol Blousch of the American Legion Auxiliary, who told the girls more about the ALA and how to join if they are eligible. Finally we heard from Governor Mary Fallin, who reminded the delegates that they can be whatever they want to be as long as they work hard and receive a good education.

After our guests left, the girls divided into their respective counties, where whistle stops were conducted. This is where they heard from the six delegates who are being considered for positions as senators for Girls Nation. After this session, Girls State voted on who they would like to see represent them in DC.

For dinner the ladies gathered for a cookout complete with hot dogs and hamburgers. We ended the night with Girls State Olympics, where each city went head to head in a series of exciting games.

Tomorrow we look forward to moot court, a trip to the Sam Noble Museum, and graduation.

What a great day at Oklahoma Girls State! It is the time of the week when the girls really begin to see all of their hard work pay off. From city reporter to the newly elected governor, each girl has found their place in our state. The next two days are the busy ones with a trip to the capitol, Girls State Olympics, and moot court all on the agenda.

The city of Clingenpeel kicked things off this morning with an excellent job of opening ceremony. We then moved directly into state conventions where each district heard candidates from both the Boomer and Sooner parties and voted on who they would like to represent them in the state elections. This convention led us all the way to lunch.

After lunch the delegates had the privilege of hearing from The Honorable George Nigh. This was Governor Nigh's 64th year speaking at Girls State! He told the ladies stories of fellow Oklahoman's who have been successful in their chosen careers. Many would say that his tales of small town gems turned famous artists, scientists, and CEO's were encouraging, and inspiring. He concluded his time with us by recounting the session in which he persuaded the state legislature to adopt the song "Oklahoma" as the state's anthem.

After singing a lovely farewell to Governor Nigh, the delegates running for lieutenant governor and governor were asked a series of questions in front of the entire Girls State. They all did a fabulous job of thinking on their toes and responding in a graceful manner. After these speeches, the girls returned to the dorm and spent the next two hours campaigning for the fast approaching elections.

At 5 o'clock all ballots were passed out and promptly returned. Our education staff immediately began tallying the points. Meanwhile the girls enjoyed a presentation by the National Sojourners, Tinker Chapter #43. These men spoke about the history of the American flag and showed the girls what it looked like throughout its various stages.

When the Sojourners were finished, the lovely Jennifer Shaw announced the results of the state elections and the ladies were quickly whisked away to a briefing on their state capitol trip tomorrow. The names of those who won will be published in the Wednesday edition of the Girls Stater. We finished the night with a talent show in which each of the sixteen cities were represented.

Tomorrow we look forward to hearing from Representative Lisa Billy and Ms. Autumn McMahan, as well as Girls State Olympics and  cookout.

Day three of the 73rd session of Oklahoma Girls State was one for the books. The ladies began their day bright and early. After Parker City led us in opening ceremony, the girls hit the ground running with speeches followed by elections. This year the staff introduced a new way of voting via text message.

After county elections took place, Girls State had the opportunity to hear from Lieutenant Governor Todd Lamb. For the third year his daughter, Lauren, joined us. It is always fun seeing a fun to see someone at Lauren's age get excited about a future in politics. The two joined us for a delicious lunch of chili dogs.

Following lunch the newly elected county officials took their oath of office, and we met our political party advisors. The girls then headed to District Conventions, where they presented speeches and voted on candidates to move on in their elections. After conventions, the Platform Committee, House of Representatives, and Senate met.

We gathered once more in the forum after dinner to greet former Girls State delegate and Girls Nation senator, Sarah Brown. She taught a class on proper business, interview, and social media etiquette. The education staff then announced the Judicial Nominating Commission, and the girls were released to go back and campaign before the day's review in their respective cities.

Tomorrow we look forward to hearing from The Honorable George Nigh and electing state officials.

The first full day of Oklahoma Girls State 2015 has officially been completed, and what an exciting day it has been! Bonham City did a fabulous job on the opening ceremony, and we heard about Girls Nation from 2014 senators Gloria Tso and Summer Stevens.

Next each city held a meeting in which city elections and appointments took place. The results of these elections will be published in the Monday edition of the Girls Stater.

After lunch the girls began filing for county offices. During this time those who filed for the Girls Nation selection process began by taking a test on current events. Later this week the staff will pick up to 8 delegates to participate in whistle stops in front of each county. After the test was over, our state gathered once more in the forum and our city officials were sworn in by 2014 Governor Gloria Tso. Finally the girls filed for District and State offices this afternoon.

After dinner we had the privilege to hear from former Girls Stater, counselor, and 2nd Lieutenant United States Army, Emily Thompson. She told her story of overcoming life's obstacles, and shared her perspective as both an active member of the army, as well as an army wife.

We wrapped this Memorial Day up with the Poppy Story read by past department president, Sue Heil. The girls had the opportunity to put together a wreath of poppies made by veterans across Oklahoma. This moving experience is always one of the most memorable parts of the week for the girls.

We look forward to hearing from The Honorable Todd Lamb, Lieutenant Governor, State of Oklahoma and Attorney Sarah Brown. Don't forget your merchandise from the Girls State Store!

Today we began the 73rd session of Oklahoma Girls State! After hours spent in preparation, it is always exciting when the ladies finally arrive.

After moving in and spending some time getting to know one another, the girls went to the forum building for the first time where director, Betty McElderry, led the opening session. Next, we welcomed Reverend Lori Walke with a big OOOOOOOklahoma. Always a favorite at Girls State, Walke gave an inspiring talk about living "As if" we have already changed the world. She encourage the ladies to get to know their counselors and to own stereotypes such as "nerd" and "bossy".

After dinner the ladies returned to the forum for a class on Parliamentary Procedure taught by Nicki Pearce. This is the procedure in which all meetings at Girls State are held, so that they are done in an efficient manner. We wrapped up the night by filing for city offices.
